Studies in the Book of Romans.
Paul's basic burden for writing this book. Is Romans 1:16-18.
This book is Paul's foundational book for the whole Christian life.
Anyone who understands this book, and puts it into practice will be established as a
believer; of course not yet fully grown; but at least established.
1st. Paul's subject from Romans 1-8 is Salvation. This I show on the chart.
2nd. Then he writes what I call a bridge to service (9-11).
Here Paul is dealing largely with the Mercy of God.
3rd. Last ofal1 in chapter 12-16, he deals with service that is founded on salvation 1-8,
and the mercy of God: 9-11.
So the first things is to embrace fully an understanding of mans sinfulness, the cause of
Gods wrath. The second thing is to understand is how God presents a way of escape from
sin and wrath through Salvation in Christ.
1. Escape from the life of sin, guilt, and wrath of through Justification. Rom 1-5
2. Escape from the power of sin through Sanctification. Rom 6-8: 13.
3. Escape from the presence of sin through Glorification. Rom 8: 14- 39.
So first things first, take time to go through this outline about sin.

Sin and Judgment
First Intro: Rom 1:16-17.
Second: exposition on sin and judgment. Romans 1 :18-32.
1 st Basic Thought: "For the wrath of God has been the revealed from heaven against
all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress truth the truth in un-
righteousness." 1: 18.
2nd Basic thought: How some truth is suppressed: Truth about God is suppressed;
because that which is known about God is evident within them, for God has made
it evident to them. 1: 19-21. (He that knows to do good and does it not, to him it is
sin).
(This above is the basic sin.)
or even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks.
Romans 1:21 Romans 3:23.
3rd Result of and the progress of the basic sin above:
They became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise they became fools (then) (They exchanged
the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of the corruptible
man and birds and animals and reptiles etc.) 1 :21-23.
1. Therefore God gave them over in the lust of their heartsto impurity, that their
bodies might be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for
A lie, and worshiped and served created things. 1 :24-25.
2. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women
exchanged the natural function, and in the same way the men abandoned the
natural function. 1 :26-27.
3. And just as they did not see fit to to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them
over to a depraved mindto do those things not proper, being filled with all un-
righteousness, wickedness 1 :28-31.
4. That although they know the ordinance of God, that they that do such things are
worthy of death, they not only do the same, but give hearty approval to those
who practice them. 1 :32.
